My Masters program focused on user research, however, I have had the opportunity to use some graphic design software to create event posters and fliers.  Below are some examples (based on templates I had created) for events for the Human Factors in Information Design Organization.  I used a monochromatic color scheme because of printing purposes.  I created all of these fliers in Adobe Illustrator.
